When it comes to DH, I can't help but be subjective because I've only had pleasant experiences, starting with V3, continuing with V4, and currently using V4 and V5. I won't sell V4, despite Alex's insistence, because it accelerates much better even than V5, and it's a pleasure to save thousands of pedals on a flow trail; in fact, you think about how to keep it in check, especially after you've taken a few laps with V5 and switch to V4. I wonder how V5.2 will be? I can't wait.

I have written about my experiences, the comparison between frames, the forks that have evolved and changed the experience, the massive run of V5, and the buttery feel, here: The Evolution of RockShox Boxxer: from the brutal fork of the '90s to D2.

Another pleasant surprise for the bikeverse community: special conditions when purchasing a Commencal from bikeverse.ro, come  and discover them, you will be surprised.

Let's see now what the new V5.2 brings, what surprises the folks at Commencal have in store, and how it looks.

It looks really cool, and the graphics are nice:

As the folks at Commencal say: development never stops.

Supreme DH V5.2 continues to pursue the same single goal: to help riders go faster on the track.

Developed at the highest level of competition, it evolves with an optimized cinematic design, a redesigned rear triangle, and deeper integration.

Every detail has been refined to enhance control, precision, and speed.

Because development never stops.

As for rear travel, it remains the same: 220 mm.

Palmares

Between 2000 and 2025, Commencal Supreme DH has achieved 55 Elite victories in the World Cup, both in men's and women's categories. Today, it is the most successful downhill bike in history.

Each generation of the Supreme DH has contributed to this legacy and has helped the brand reach today's performance level.

Continuous reinvention is in the DNA of Commencal DH, as stated by Arthur Quet:

With the ever-evolving nature of downhill racing and a wide variety of tracks, the strategic choice of bike settings at the beginning of the season is no longer relevant. Versatility is needed.

The level of World Cup racing continues to rise and demands intense work from riders in choosing race lines and limiting time spent on settings.

The requirements of the Supreme DH V5 are simple: to create a no-compromise bike that excels and inspires confidence, regardless of the track.

On the technical side, we use high virtual pivot point (HVCS) kinematics. This 6-bar system gives us maximum control over suspension behavior, regardless of the range of travel used.

The balance, shock absorption, and dynamism of the bike work in harmony. The goal has been achieved!

Arthur Quet, Race Program Technical Manager

Evolution of V5.2

HVCS Kinematics

The High Virtual Contact System continues to evolve, especially around the rear triangle. The pivot point located near the rear wheel axle has now moved from the chainstays to the seatstays. A subtle change on paper, but it brings significant benefits on the trail: the bike gains reactivity and acceleration on fast sections while providing greater comfort and control on rough terrain.

This is the essence of HVCS: combining sensations that seem impossible to reconcile.

Braking Performance

Braking performance has been a major focus of development. The brake caliper is now positioned between the chainstays and seatstays. Combined with HVCS kinematics, this evolution delivers greater control by keeping the suspension active and limiting weight transfer to the front wheel.

The frame is compatible with rotors from 200 mm to 223 mm, to handle the most demanding tracks.

There, positioned, it seems even more protected from falls but probably also harder to access for changing pads... I've seen the caliper squeezed in there on XC bikes, I have it on my Merida Ninetysix, but I haven't seen it on DH bikes. On V4.4 it is mounted on a welded support from the frame:

And on V5, it is fully mounted but on supports bolted to the frame, with the help of some adapters:

Inside view, you can see the frame mounting screws but also the mounting accessories for the caliper supports on the frame. I won't comment that the disc has eaten a bit from the spacer, probably delaying the pad change and the necessary cleaning before uniform pushing of the 4 pistons...

The caliper can be moved further forward or backward (see the small accessories in the picture below) depending on the position of the rear wheel; remember I told you how I tried to put a 29-inch wheel on V5 in the back in an attempt to achieve the same acceleration as on V4, but unfortunately, the acceleration did not increase...

And don't forget to order the necessary accessories for such adjustments if you want to make them; they are not included in the initial bike setup, including for changing the type of wheel, hub attachment to the frame, see below:

Frame Protection

Supreme DH V5.2 comes with a new generation of protections for the chainstay and seatstay called “Silent Mode”. The goal is simple: to eliminate transmission noise as much as possible while reducing chain slap — those impacts with the rear triangle that can affect suspension performance.

These protections use a dual-density rubber construction, with a rigid base and large soft rubber wings for maximum vibration and impact dampening.

commencal supreme dh v5 2 silent mode dual density protections

This is indeed an improvement because, when we got it among the first, we pre-ordered it and waited for months with bated breath. By the way, if you want a specific bike, you're an early adopter, you must pre-order it. I hesitated to order a Commencal with Avinox motor and since July the deadline moved to August... And size M sells out first, very quickly... Make the pre-order, pay for it, and you are sure it will come, well, provided the factory makes it on time, without delays. Otherwise, you'll be riding it next year, and the guys will look at you, hey, weren't you with the latest models, what happened? Or the model might even disappear, but you get a newer one and probably more expensive, because that's how times are, better, more expensive, faster.

And when it finally arrived, I found that the protection was too short, the chain was biting into the chainstay, so I put a self-adhesive tape to solve the problem. From the next versions, they corrected the issue.

Comparing the rear triangles V5 vs V5.2, you can see that the joint has moved from the chainstay to the seatstay.

Internal Cables

On the front triangle, the cables now run through the head tube.

Besides the cleaner look, this solution allows the use of internal sleeves connected directly to the inserts in the head tube, making bike maintenance significantly easier, especially during races when every minute counts.

These internal sleeves also improve sealing against water, dust, and mud.

On the V5, I really had issues with the free routing of cables alongside the frame; the plastic support doesn't hold them well and the rear brake line digs into the coating of the left Boxxer tube, see the effects over time, don't underestimate the dust, the line becomes a small file acting thousands of times with every left turn:

Compatibility

With the adoption of the UDH standard, the Supreme DH V5.2 is ready for the latest generation drivetrains and is compatible with the newest SRAM groups, including XX DH T-Type.

Adjustments and Settings

The Supreme DH V5.2 retains the adaptable geometry that made the V5 a success and offers more frame adjustment options.

Geometry Flip Chip

A flip chip on the lower shock mount allows for geometry adjustment to suit trail conditions.

It affects bottom bracket height, head angle, reach, and chainstay length.

  • The high position favors agility on slower, flatter, and more technical trails.

  • The low position improves stability on fast and steep trails.

A flip chip at the shock anchor allows adjustment of the suspension kinematics.

It has four positions that can be adapted based on how you ride or what you ride on. More linear with front grip, more progressive with rear grip.

Stiffness Adjustment

The removable bar located between the seatstays allows for the adjustment of the rear frame stiffness, depending on the rider's preference and terrain conditions. According to the official technical sheet, there are 3 thicknesses available for this bar.

Fork Angle

The head tube maintains the standard ZS56/ZS56 and remains compatible with Angleset cups, allowing for the adjustment of the head angle for specific needs.

Geometry

Developed and validated through racing, the geometry of the Supreme DH V5.2 is the result of several seasons of evolution of the V5 platform.

Each size has been designed to work in harmony with the HVCS kinematics and to provide the same dynamic balance to every rider.

No extreme solutions, just proven proportions that prioritize speed, grip, and stability on any terrain.

29/27.5 Format

The 29/27.5 wheel configuration, also known as mullet, has become the preferred choice of Commencal riders due to the balance between high-speed stability and agility.
